PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Thai pavilion draws inspiration from some special, precious symbols of Thailand, which represent the very essence of Thai culture and are related to the themes of food production and environmental protection – the core themes of Expo 2015.The Ngob,a hat traditionally worn by farmers and food sellers at the market,  is the most immediately recognisable symbol of the pavilion, and forms its main building. This element consists of a steel frame and lamellar wood panels, both having a decorative function and serving as a brise soleil: the hat’s wooden lamellas are arranged to create a combination of empty and full spaces thanks to each panel’s inclination.

The pavilion is approximately 100 m long and 30 m wide; the main building is 40 m long and is about 60 metres away from the Decumanus. It is less than 12 m high, while the Ngob’s wooden lamellar outer decoration reaches a height of 15 m. Building and finishing materials were selected with a focus on easy installation / usage as well as demolition and dismantling at the end of the event.
